Interconnection of Teaching with Research

In the Postgraduate Study Programs of the University of Ioannina’s Department of Education Sciences, scientific research is conducted within the spectrum of each scientific field. Specifically, within the framework of the MSc program “Special Education and Training,” the established Laboratory of Special Education and Training demonstrates intensive research and developmental activities, collaborating with other entities to ensure the updating of research policies and objectives of the MSc program and to achieve effective education for postgraduate students (see https://specialedu.lab.uoi.gr).

The Laboratory of Special Education and Training, actively involving postgraduate students, serves the educational and research needs in the subjects of Special Education and Training and Special Learning Difficulties. Its mission includes producing valid, reliable, and objective scientific knowledge, conducting basic and applied research related to disabilities, special educational needs, learning difficulties, and special education at all levels of education. Additionally, it covers the research and training needs of other Departments of the University of Ioannina, develops experimental designs and applications, creates and evaluates diagnostic or other research tools/scales, manages websites and digital educational materials, organizes scientific seminars, symposiums, conferences, and publishes scientific publications and editions (see https://specialedu.lab.uoi.gr, Program Guide for Postgraduate Studies for the academic year 2022-2023, page 148).

The faculty members in the MSc program “Special Education and Training” have a strong research and scientific presence, with national and international recognition in their respective fields. The MSc program places particular emphasis on training postgraduate students in the research process. As part of this effort, the mandatory course “Research Design-Research Methodology in Special Education I” and the elective course “Research Design-Research Methodology in Special Education II” are included in the curriculum. Furthermore, in other courses, postgraduate students undertake research assignments. Additionally, during the mandatory preparation of the MSc Thesis, postgraduate students develop a research plan, which they implement under the supervision of their supervisor (see Thesis Writing Regulations). They also participate by presenting the results of their empirical research at international conferences, symposiums, and seminars, as well as publishing their research papers in reputable scientific journals e.g., see:
